Understanding contractor insurance
Whatever the policy says, the state sets the minimum. Requirements differ enough between states that the table is worth checking before you work somewhere new.
The policy does not change. What changes is the requirement wrapped around it: who licenses contractors, whether general liability is required to hold that license, whether workers compensation can be exempted, and the size of the license bond.
Understand four things about your own policy before you need it: what counts as your work, who is an insured, whether coverage is occurrence or claims made, and what your classifications actually say.
Verified against state licensing authorities and statutes in an October 2026 research pass. Where no figure is published, the table says so rather than estimating.
